Most thermometers are originally calibrated to a constant-volume gas thermometer.
Such systems are known as " ideal gas thermometers ".
For such measurements a gas thermometer is more suitable.
The ideal gas thermometer is, however, not theoretically perfect for thermodynamics.
These include helium vapor pressure thermometers, helium gas thermometers, monochromatic radiation thermometers.
So a gas thermometer, no matter how small or unobtrusive, is incapable of measuring negative temperatures.
